How to read mobility equipment specifications
A specification sheet describes equipment. It does not determine whether a device is suitable for you.
At a glance
- Match the exact model and configuration, not just the photograph.
- Keep equipment weight, capacity and dimensions separate.
- Use unfamiliar figures as questions for the supplier or care team.
Start with the exact model
Check the model number and configuration. A product-family name or photograph may not identify the equipment in a quote. Ask for the matching manufacturer’s instructions.
Separate the different measurements
Overall dimensions, seat dimensions and folded dimensions answer different questions. Ask which measurements apply during use and which accessories change them. Do not assume one width measurement describes every part of the equipment.
Distinguish equipment weight from capacity
Product weight and the stated load limit are different specifications. Ask the supplier to explain the manufacturer’s limit, what it includes and any configuration-specific restrictions. Do not guess at a safe margin.
Treat adjustment ranges as questions
A seat or handle adjustment range is not a fitting assessment. Ask a qualified healthcare professional which fit questions need evaluation. MedlinePlus notes that selecting and fitting mobility aids can require professional help.
Ask what performance figures assume
For powered equipment, ask about conditions behind advertised battery-range figures. Request the charging, storage, operating-environment and maintenance instructions for the exact model. An advertised figure is not a personal-use guarantee.
Verify compatibility and transport details
Ask which accessories the manufacturer permits and how equipment may be folded, lifted, secured or transported. A portability claim is not a substitute for manufacturer instructions. Request the manual, an explanation of unfamiliar controls and the appropriate support contact.
Your question checklist
Use these optional checkmarks while reading. This demo does not submit or save your checkmarks, and it does not ask for health or contact information.
Use this guide to prepare questions. Follow your clinician’s guidance and the instructions for your exact equipment. This is not a suitability recommendation or coverage decision.
