A caregiver’s equipment planning checklist
Organize practical questions before requesting equipment for yourself or someone you support.
At a glance
- Ask the care team which decisions need professional guidance.
- Compare complete, dated quotes rather than a headline price.
- Confirm coverage separately before ordering.
Start with the care team
Ask which equipment category, fitting, adjustments and training need professional guidance. A planning checklist cannot determine the right device for someone. MedlinePlus recommends involving a healthcare provider or physical therapist when choosing mobility aids and emphasizes appropriate fit.
Make a practical plan
Write down when equipment is needed, where it will be used and stored, which stairs, doorways or tight turns need discussion, who will receive it and who will learn how to use it. Treat measurements as information for a conversation, not proof that equipment will fit or be safe.
Compare complete written quotes
Ask each supplier for the exact manufacturer, model, configuration and included accessories. Clarify purchase or rental terms, condition, item price, taxes, deposits, delivery, setup and collection charges. Ask what fitting, training, maintenance and repair support are included, and review return, cancellation and possible-charge terms. The FDA advises checking return policies and customer support before ordering home-use equipment.
Check coverage separately
Ask your plan and supplier about the exact item, documentation, supplier requirements and expected personal cost before ordering. Medicare’s medical equipment rules include eligibility and supplier requirements; a product being called medical equipment does not establish coverage.
Keep the unanswered questions visible
Keep each quote dated and mark missing answers “not yet confirmed.” Do not assume delivery, training, support or reimbursement is included simply because it has not been discussed.
